A mass shooting in Austin has left at least three people dead, including the shooter, and 14 others hospitalized. The city is responding with a network of medical, mental health and fundraising efforts aimed at victims, families and affected communities.
We Are Blood, the regional blood center, has issued an appeal for donors with O positive and O negative blood types to give now to support the injured. Appointments are requested to ensure supplies meet hospital needs.
Night Owl Therapy, a local nonprofit serving nightlife industry workers, artists and entertainers, has opened its services at no extra charge to clients affected by the shooting. The organization is offering free therapy sessions to help those directly and indirectly impacted begin coping with trauma.
Bathe Austin has scheduled a free Silent Hour on Tuesday morning, March 3, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The East Austin soaking garden will be open without charge for community members seeking a quiet, restorative space; participants are asked to bring swimwear and keep phones offsite during the session.
The University of Texas at Austin outlined support for students, including a crisis line at 512-471-2255 and Student Outreach and Support at 512-471-5017, to connect students with counseling and assistance services. The university is coordinating outreach for anyone on campus who needs immediate help.
A crowdfunding page has been created to assist the family of Ryder Harrington, one of the people killed in the shooting. The fundraiser states donations will go directly to the Harrington family to help cover immediate needs and supports.
The SIMS Foundation is offering expanded mental health resources for members of the local music community, providing counseling and referrals as musicians and venue workers process the event. Officials say the foundation will direct services where the community shows greatest need.
Local businesses are also hosting benefit events. Downtown bar Marfa Lights, at 718 W. Sixth St., plans to donate 100 percent of sales on Friday, March 6, from 4 p.m. until closing to families of the victims. On Saturday, March 7, JABS will contribute all proceeds from its operations to Night Owl Therapy to support continued counseling for affected nightlife workers.
Community members seeking to help are encouraged to donate blood if they match requested types, reach out to the listed mental health resources, and consider attending or contributing to the benefit events and verified fundraisers. More details and sign-up options are available through the organizations involved.
