- What: Jay Trachtenberg has been to every Austin City Limits Music Festival since its 2002 debut.
- Who: Trachtenberg is a program manager and longtime midday host at KUTX.
- Where: The festival is held at Zilker Park in Austin, and Trachtenberg has also used nearby Barton Springs to escape the heat.
- Why it matters: His observations trace ACL’s growth from a small, Americana-rooted event into a much larger gathering that reflects changes in Austin’s economy and festival culture.
Jay Trachtenberg has been present at every Austin City Limits Music Festival, a streak that stretches back to the event’s start in 2002. He remembers the first year as lightly attended, with a crowd size that made moving around the park easy and a lineup shaped by the city’s Americana roots.
Over the years Trachtenberg has watched ACL bring major performers to Zilker Park, citing headliners such as Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Lizzo among those he recalls. He singles out Ben Harper’s set in the festival’s second year as particularly memorable, describing a night when most attendees had gathered on one side of the park and the show felt like a unifying moment.
During especially hot, dry years when dust covered the grass, Trachtenberg would go to Barton Springs for a swim and still hear music drifting from the festival. Those brief escapes became part of his festival routine for several seasons.
He views the early ACL events as marking a cultural shift in Austin, and notes that the festival has become much more crowded as the city has attracted high-tech businesses. Trachtenberg also observes that major music festivals have lost some of their distinct identities over time, with Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Coachella evolving toward similar lineups. He says he accepts those changes and continues to attend.
